Why Use A Basking Lamp

How Long Do Basking Lamps Last?

The average life of a UV basking lamp is approximately 6,000 hours (8 months of continuous use). However, the use of a terrarium light controller that turns your light on and off when the ideal temperature or time has been reached, can extend the life of your bulb to around a year. It is important that you change your bulb annually even if it is still lit as the quality of UV light it emits will diminish after than and the benefits to bone health reduce.

What Other Equipment Would I Need?

Secure your lamp in your vivarium with a suitable lamp holder. You can also use a guard to protect your pet from getting to close to a hot bulb (particularly for arboreal species and snakes) and a reflector to ensure all that beneficial light reaches the vivarium floor. Add a thermostat to ensure you maintain your vivarium at the correct temperature and extend the life of the bulb.
